Unionville High School is a community that fosters the growth of students in all capacities: academically, athletically, and more. Students are able to push themselves and achieve success through the guidance and leadership of staff, teachers, and coaches. One of Unionville’s educators, Chris Cowles, Ninth Grade Western Civilization teacher, and Head Varsity Boys Basketball Coach, has morphed the team into quite the skilled powerhouse by helping players excel.

After coaching at West Chester East and Downingtown West, Cowles began coaching at Unionville in 2017. After almost eleven consecutive losing seasons, Cowles helped change the course of the team with almost six winning seasons, and multiple appearances at various playoff game stages. Since his arrival, Cowles and his fellow coaches have steered the hardworking, determined players toward consistent success year after year. In order to keep his team focused on their goals, Cowles consistently implements the “MAXOUT” mentality. This mindset allows players to push their limits, reach their true potential, and overcome whatever obstacles stand before them. “Life can be difficult, but when you come out on the other side, you’re better able to handle that kind of adversity. Overcoming perceived adversity is important and ultimately useful in all parts of life”, Cowles notes.

Cowles also prioritizes the idea that basketball is much more than a sport; “I think they come into it naively and then leave with a different mindset about what basketball is and how it would apply to their lives”, Cowles expresses. Especially with the rigorous year-round training, Cowles’ mindset additionally creates an encouraging environment amongst players aside from outside supporters. “I think the support we do receive is nice, but at the end of the day, there’s no one in the gym at 6:30 in the morning during summer workouts. Again, the positive outside noise is great, but it’s really about our team as a cohesive unit working together”, Cowles reiterates.

The mentality of the program has transcended into the everyday life of players and empowered them through their post-high school endeavors, whatever they may be. Although their season is well underway, Cowles and his team strive toward their goals and advance into playoffs. Through his impact on players and students, Cowles continues to serve as an integral part of the community, on and off the court.
