New Beginnings
While the girls’ golf team was not initially approved, this did not end all hope for the golfers and their families. The main obstacle they had to face was timing— Would they be able to plan and complete a full season before districts? Although it would be a challenge, the girls were determined to make it work. While waiting for approval, the unofficial team had the opportunity to play in out-of-league tournaments against other female golfers. Eventually, with the hard work devoted by numerous parents, the Athletic Director, and Bent Creek’s very own golf pro, Chip Kappesser, the season was finally planned and approved. Maci Seibel took the role of the head coach for the team, taking the girls to every match and tournament of the season: “We can’t thank Coach Seibel enough for helping us get through this challenging season and for always supporting and encouraging us!” says golfer Caitlyn White. The first step of action for these girls was to fit in all their matches within the span of about two weeks. Almost everyday they would play a nine hole match against a different team. Even though a win or loss would not affect their chances at leagues, they played their best in every match.
Last Season’s Successes
The 2023 season came with many victories for the golf team, holding a record of 6-3. Being their first year, they now hold both a league and district title, carrying them to states. At the PIAA states championship, the team placed second, putting up a good fight against Peters Township. Piper Smith shot a 72, Paisley Kappesser with an 81, and Sonia Dumasia with an 83 to end the round. Along with the team’s accomplishments at the State Championship, three of the girls individually qualified to compete in the competition. Piper Smith, Paisley Kappesser, and Sonia Dumasia all qualified to play for an individual state title last season. Considering the late start and the recent beginnings of the Manheim Township girls golf team, the results of the season were better than anyone could have dreamt.
Future Aspirations
Although the girl’s first season presented many challenging obstacles, the team proved to be successful, and a bright future is promising: “If we can get through this tough season, we can get through anything,” says Paisley Kappesser, a golfer on the team. With the team’s 6-3 record (against mostly male teams) and their second-place finish at states, you never would have guessed that their season had a significantly delayed start. With only six girls on the team last season, there are plenty of spots for girls who are looking to play golf and join the team in the upcoming years. For girls who are interested in playing golf, Piper Smith says: “Golf can help you escape from the world, and it teaches you patience along with many valuable life lessons.” The Manheim Township Girls Golf Team had an amazing 2023 debut season, and the team members can’t wait to expand the team to more golfers this upcoming year. As Sonia Dumasia says, “The 2024 girls golf season holds many opportunities that I cannot wait to see unfold”.
